A DISCOURSE APPROACH TO POLITICAL METAPHOR ANALYSIS

The article highlights some features of the discourse approach to political metaphor analysis in contemporary linguistics. It is argued that in American and European linguistics discourse approach embraces a number of particular theories and methodologies such as critical discourse analysis, descriptive discourse analysis, discursive theory of democratization, discursive analysis of social structures, crisis communication combination theory (CCC-theory), the discursive notion of metaphor. In Russian linguistics a discourse approach to political metaphor analysis is mainly represented by the cognitive-discursive paradigm.

«СHILDREN’S LETTER» AS A GENRE OF THE RUSSIAN

The article is devoted to “children’s letters” treated as a genre of informal fluent written speech in the framework of a communicative-semiotic model. The article singles out and defines the compositional structure of “children’s letters” and the model components involved in the organization of children’s New Year genre letters to Ded Moroz (Grandfather Frost). The study reveals a series of components that are relevant to the genre specificity of the analyzed speech variety.

ON A LITTLE-RUSSIAN HISTORICAL NOVEL BY NIKOLAI GOGOl

Documentary – based, the article examines the circumstances of closing down the journal «Otechestvennye Zapiski» in 1884, and dwells on the character of M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin’s prosaic work after the magazine shutdown. Special attention is paid to the phenomenon of the writer’s fairy tales.

THE FUNCTIONS OF CHRONOTOP IN «WINTER NOTES ON SUMMER IMPRESSIONS» BY FEDOR M. DOSTOEVSKY

The article is devoted to the peculiarities of chronotop function in the «Winter Notes on Summer Impressions» by Fedor Dostoevsky. The Emphasis is placed on the chronotope of the road and the city. Based on their analysis, the connection of spatio-temporal structure in the journalistic essay with its genre distinctions is stated. It was found that switches from one chronotop to the other lead to a fusion of different genre traditions in the text by F. Dostoevsky.

SPIRITUAL TRADITION IN ANDREI PLATONOV’S HERITAGE: BETWEEN ATTRACTION AND REPULSION

The article studies the work of Andrei Platonov in the aspect of the Christian spiritual tradition. It reveals the importance of Biblicisms in ontological poetics of the writer. Platonov shows the complexity of relations with the Orthodox tradition that displayed its repulsion in the writer’s early time of creativity, while in his mature years he grew stronger attraction to it.

“The metaphysicsof the North” is original not only due to its ties to traditional
thinking practices, but also because its ideological potentials that are realized mainly in literary discourse and reflected in the form of geo-cultural ethnic space that is recreated aesthetically. Understanding the “native lands”or philosophy of ethnic topos in this case is related to the issue of ontology, to defining the truth and the spirit of ethnic existence.

IT DEPENDS ON THE LANGUAGE ONE SEE IT

The article focuses on the fact that the meaning, understanding and interpretation of some of the images of visual art depend not only on the cultural code, but also on the natural language in which the viewer recognizes and identifies the image of the object (the same is applied to the artists themselves – they also depict some things in accordance with their natural language). This is shown by the examples of British cartoon character of “a turkey”, Polish, Finnish Easter postcards, Russian toys with the motif of willow catkins and Serbian drawing with the motif of a tulip.

THE POET AND THE AUTHORITY
Models of writers’ attitudes in a totalitarian state. Based upon poems of Zbigniew Herbert and Stanisław Barańczak

In Polish literature of the second half of the XXth century (in particular, until the end of the 80’s) one can find numerous examples of mutual relations between writers/poets and authorities – from full compliance and declared support to explicitly declared protest. Such relations are described in the poems of Zbigniew Herbert and Stanisław Barańczak, among others. In Herbert’s poems the acquiescent attitude is judged negatively and the art in the authority’s service is presented as untrue (hypocritical). On the other hand, Barańczak’s poems depict the persecution, intimidating actions on the part of the authorities (ways of
harassment) towards the dissentient poet.

PROVERBS / SAYINGS IN A CONTEMPORARY FAMILY AND A COMMON LAW

During the pre-state period, proverbs and sayings (as a genre of folklore) were coding the unseen rules of the social behavior. Since the period of forming a state and “written rules” proverbs and sayings were relegated to the background of the social life as a common law (customary law) and as an important part of the modern person’s language environment. Nowadays they control the interfamilial life and exist inan opposition to the legal rules. The person’s out-of-home life, which is reflected in proverbs and dayings, deals with people’s social responsibility and social norms. At this point paroemias about the role of words in social contacts take a special place. The person’s conduct in his or her family circle is governed by the rules which are not written anywhere and apparently take their beginning in the high antiquity due to the fact that they are based on a very archaic rule of the force and the right of the first. Besides the common home rules, there are also the rules of keeping connection between parents and children and between husband and wife. The third group of proverbs and sayings formulates not a code of conduct, but rules beyond the human’s power.

The multilayer polysemantic detail tying all the «knots» of the narrative, holds the key to the author’s game of the text and the subtext.

The article is devoted to the common ideas in the literary worlds of F.M. Dostoevsky and V.P. Astafiev. The main peculiarity of Dostoevsky’s discourse is the reflection of a special kind of existence – other-worldliness (dvoemorie) – the interpenetration of common life and being, real and transcendental, temporary and timeless, human and universal. The author shows that the relation of real and superreal is also specifically represented in ‘cruel realism’ of V. Astafiev.

The article draws a parallel between the visual images in Hoffmann’s short story “The Golden Pot” and in F.M. The article is dedicated to the analysis of particularities of Nicolai Stavrogin’s portrait description in translations of F.M.Dostoyevsky’s novel “Demons” into the French language. The portrait is considered an important element of the poetic and semantic structure of the writer’s novels. The authors make a comparative analysis of the chosen fragments of the novel “Demons”, representing a portrait of Stavrogin, and their translations into the French language. COGNITIVE METAPHOR IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE CONCEPTUAL INTEGRATION THEORY

The paper deals with the fundamentals of the theory of conceptual integration (blending theory) developed by G. Fauconnier and M. Turner as an alternative to widely spread theory of conceptual metaphor resolved by G. Lakoff and M. Johnson. We consider the concepts of middle spaces, input spaces, generic space, blended space, and integration networks. It is argued that terminology and a specific approach to conceptual metahorization analysis are not the only distinctive features of the theory of blending. The aims of the research claimed within the blending theory show that the theory of conceptual integration does not oppose the theory of conceptual metaphor, but supplements it.

THE METAGENRE NATURE OF VYACHESLAV IVANOV’S “TALE OF TSAREVICH SVETOMIR” AND THE PROBLEM OF TRADITIONS BLENDING

The article proposes a concept that considers Vyacheslav Ivanov’s “Tale of Tsarevich Svetomir” as a met a genre story. Strategies of blending the traditions of
medieval legends about Holy Grail and hagiography are considered in the article. Similarities of plots, motives and images are analyzed. The hypothesis is made that the legend about Vyacheslav Czech was a hidden source. It is supposed that Vyacheslav Ivanov created a mythological epos as an experimental analogue of religious Slavic fantasy fiction.

ACMEIST DECLARATIONS OF S.M. GORODETSKY AND PREDICATIVE USE OF COMPARATIVE WITH COPULA

The article makes an attempt to establish the relations of the linguistic characteristics of S.M. Gorodetsky’s poetry with the basic ideological attitudes of the acmeists, including the requirement of attention to real detail and the requirement of consistency. The author comes to the conclusion that the greatest frequency of comparative in constructions with a copula in S.M. Gorodetsky’spoetry is tied to eclecticism acceptance of the world “in the totality of beauty and ugliness” in modern reality. The results obtained in the work may be interesting for literary scholars, researching the work of S.M. Gorodetsky and the poetry of the Silver Age, and can find application in the practice of compiling the poet’s vocabulary.

MIKHAIL SERGEEVICH BASHILOV AS AN ILLUSTRATOR OF LEO TOLSTOY’S AND MIKHAIL SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN’S WORKS

Mikhail Sergeevich Bashilov was the first illustrator of Leo Tolstoy’s novel “War and Peace” and one of the pioneers who illustrated the “Provincial Sketches” of Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin. Meanwhile, the illustrations of the “War and Peace” were not published during his lifetime because Tolstoy denied the idea of publishing the illustrated novel. Yet the failure of such a decision was declared as Bashilov’s fault.The illustrations of the “Provincial Sketches” were not approved by Saltykov as his manner had changed by the 1860s when the illustrations appeared. Descendants appreciate Bashilov as the book illustrator, but nevertheless he is out of the history of the Russian illustration.

A FEMALE IN A PHAETON: FEMALE GEOGRAPHIC MOBILITY AND SPATIAL EMANCIPATION IN FICTION OF ART NOUVEAU ERA

The paper sets out the problem of the socio-cultural implications of such an important but underconceptualized historical process as the acquisition of spatio-physical freedom in the public sphere by women and their en masse geographic mobility on the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It also traces the reflection of this process in the fiction of the art nouveau period. The concept of female spatial emancipation is introduced to reach this aim.

ECHOES OF THE LITERARY AVANT-GARDE IN THE NEWSPAPER “LITERARY SIBERIA” (1933–1934)

The article presents general information about the little-known Siberian edition of the newspaper «Literary Siberia». The newspaper was published in Novosibirsk in 1933–1934. The compliance of the editorial policy of the newspaper with the ideological platform of the method of socialist realism is demonstrated. Special attention is focused on the analysis of the poetics of two rare exceptions to the general rule where the echoes receding into the past of the literary avant-garde represented by the poems «Letter to a friend» by V. Nepomnyashchikh and «ТВС» by Eduard Bagritsky are heard.

Among these materials are Dobychin’s correspondence with the editors of “Russkij Sovremennik” magazine and his autograph of the short story “Old Women in Small Town” (1924); an application form filled in by Dobychin when joining the Russian Union of Writers (1930); Dobychin’s letters to writer Leontiy Rakovsky; the last autographs of the short stories “Paramedic”, “Petrov” and “Father” (1930) belonging to Rakovsky’s personal archive; special reports of state security agents containing Soviet writers’ judgments of Dobychin’s work and fate (1936-1937), which significantly contribute new information to the previous publications of similar documents, and several other archival discoveries.

Autographs of the short stories that Dobychin donated to writer Leontiy Rakovsky, advance our understanding the origin of these texts. Thus, our understanding of these issues is furthered by the new insights on the singular corrections in the short stories “Paramedic” and “Palmistry” (the latter was initially titled “Petrov”), the full text of the early revision of the short story “Father,” and the recently discovered source of the first publication of the short story “The Portrait.”

The article presents two photo portraits of the writer’s sister Olga Dobychin (1897 — ?). They were taken during her studies at Emperor Nicolas I Orphan Institute in Moscow. Terseness and precision of the inscription on Olga’s later photo and her signature remind of style and graphic art of Leonid Dobychin.

“ENCOUNTERS WITH LIZ” (The Character and Her Prototype)

Many of L. Dobychin’s characters refer to real people who lived in a real town of Bryansk of the 1900-1920s. The most feminine character from Dobychin’s short story “Encounters with Liz” had her prototype, the wife of the writer’s colleague, Olga Poyarkov. They in fact share many features in their looks, ideas and biography facts. The same can be applied to other characters in the short story, such as Fishkina, Zolotukhina. In this respect, epigraphic words by V. Bakhtin stating lack of prototypes to the characters do not seem quite true.

«THE MATCHMAKERS’ DANCE» AND THE POSTCARDS DEDICATED TO LEO TOLSTOY’S DEATH (Two Notes)

The article indicates the visual origin of two images in Dobychin’s prose. The postcards, dedicated to Leo Tolstoy’s death, mentioned in Dobychin’s novel «The Town of N» (1935), are, in fact, reproductions of the two paintings by a Polish painter Jan Styka (1858–1925): «On the Road to Infinity» and «The Excommunicated». These postcards were printed in Paris after 1910. The painting «The Matchmakers’ Dance» mentioned in the short story «Konopatchikova» (1926), was made by artist Konstantin Yuon (1875–1958); it was reproduced in the «Niva» magazine in 1913. Identification of these original images is an important contribution to our understanding of the artistic method of Dobychin’s prose and its poetics.

THE LITTLE CHAPEL IN MEMORY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST’ BEHEADING

The article discusses the motives underlying the erection of the little chapel by Widow A.L. Vagel in Leonid Dobychin’s novel “The Town of N”. It is posited that the idea behind this project is to unite the Russian Orthodox population of the township and confront Catholicism. The author of the article points out the connection between the cross-confessional-conflict in the novel and the historical events of the 18th century Poland. Discovering this new parallel helps us realize the historical and cultural complexity of the novel.

NEVER MEETING LIZ: ON PORTRAYING A MAN FROM THE MASSES IN DOBYCHIN’S SHORT STORIES

Short stories prior to “The City of N” are analyzed as a whole with the main focus on the absence of the event which had been the main object of representation in the classical fiction. The “Encounters with Liz” collection represents the ‘event’ of ‘non-eventfulness’ while in the “Portrait” collection we come across either the ‘before-event’ or the ‘pseudo-event’. Everything happening to the protagonist he identifies as the event, well aware of the lack of any eventfulness in his own life and yearning about this fact. Movies and swimming make up for the absence of real events in life. The time of non-eventfulness when the characters yearn for the event appears to be the period of blindness for them, and it is the flash of the event that heals their eyesight of the main character.

SILENCE AND PARALIPSIS IN L. DOBYCHIN’S PROSE

Leonid Dobychin is not only a man of letters, but also a master of paralipsis. He is rather taciturn in his prose and uses words carefully and economically. The message of Dobychin’s texts is not stated overtly, one has to read “between the lines”. Thus, Dobychin plays a game with his reader, which makes it exciting to read his stories and impels the reader to reread his prose time and again.

THE BEGINNING OF THE NOVEL: «THE RETURN OF DOCTOR FAUSTUS» IN E.L. MINDLIN’S PROSE

The article touches upon an unfinished novel by Mindlin in which the writer violates the typical model of the genre. The small form of the novel is made by eight short chapters. The term “novel” becomes an axiological definition. The writer introduces the reader to a clear-cut axiological system. The writer created his destiny as a journey to the world of hidden entities. The main purpose of this motion for Mindlin was the idea of ideas: the lost old age of rejuvenated Faustus, “a cup drunk to the dregs”. Mindlin’s unfinished novel features paleontological construction: reconstruction of the early “mythological” basis by analyzing the recent events. Such dependence can be shown within a broader cultural context. For example, Acts of the Martyrs with their martyrdom topic, intercultural discourse by G.G. Shvittau associated with Goethe’s notion of Weltliteratur; image of Ch. F. Nicolai – Goethe’s contemporary writer. Three cities – Moscow, Prague and Berlin – became a kind of theatrical stage to enact the drama of ideas (eschatological theme of “non-eternal city” etc.). “The Return of Doctor Faustus” lays a sort of mnemonic power – “recollecting” potential. Mindlin expressed in his myth of Faustus that direct communication in which he lived and was thinking. A conceptualsemantic shift was made – towards the conversation between poets. The conversation began long ago, is incompletable and cannot be broken forever. There is always some space left for the resumption of the mysteries of the conversation, which is filled with the knowledge and teaching. It contains the poetics of abstinence from death: death does not exist before the end of the story. Literature confronts nothingness. The conversation is the idea and the reality, a mobile semantic form, a form a dynamic context. This feature is embodied in Mindlin’s real communication and texts. Therefore, in the suggested analysis the article writer applies to the method of personalized comparison and the search of implicit parallels in personal biographies.

THOMAS HOOD’S TRADITIONS IN THE RUSSIAN LITERATURE AND CULTURE OF THE SECOND HALF OF XIXth – BEGINNING OF XXth CENTURY

The article presents a comparative analysis of creative traditions founded by an English poet Thomas Hood reflected in Russian literature and culture of the second half of XIXth – early XXth century. Under analysis are materials related to the activities of Russian poets, as well as masters of painting and drama. T. Hood’s traditions can be found not only in the Russian poetry of the second half of XIXth – early XXth century but also in prose of Russian writers of this period (N.G. Chernyshevsky’s “What Is to Be Done?” F.M. Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment”). Thomas Hood’s name appeared in the Russian press and in translated prose. Thomas Hood’s creative traditions reflected in Russian literature and culture of the second half of the XIXth – early XXth century are quite numerous and at the same time, they are very biased. Turning to Hood’s texts was a kind of “marker” of Russian writers and artists’ social position of the time, although their attention was drawn not to the English author’s creative work in general but to some of his socially loaded poems, and first of all The Song of the Shirt, and to a less extent – The Bridge of Sighs, The Lady’s Dream, The Lay of the Labourer which were in tune with people’s aspirations of that time.

The paper dwells on the collector’s work by Ekaterina Vladimirovna Novosiltseva (T. Tolycheva), who compiled a set of oral short stories told by the common folk (1850–1880). Special consideration is paid to the main memorial themes and motives, characteristic of informants’ attitude towards the events and the emotional content of the short stories.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF ONE HISTORICAL FORM OF EXPRESSING EMOTIONAL STATES IN OLD RUSSIAN

Comparing the meaning of verbs of perception and general feelings, the author states a “threefold” nature of their grammatical subject, which contains three semantic component (the subject of thought, the subject will, and subject of the action), which become actualized depending on the nature of relations between the sentence subject and verb meaning. In case of identical relations the subject is realized as the Agent in the “nominative” sentence structure, and if the relations are possessive – as the Beneficiary (the Subject of the Volition) in the “Dative-Case” sentrnce structure. The author finds the same relationship between subject and verb are in the semantic opposition known in comparative linguistics as “nonresultative” and “resultative” perfect. Old Russian texts show that the regular form to express emotional state was “nominative” emotional construction similar to the “non-result” verb perfect, in which the experiencer of emotion carries three semantic functions but as Agent, without having the role of Subject of Volition. Devoid of subject motivation, emotional states were expressed in Old Russian as a mimic and vocal responses to external stimuli.

The article is devoted to the poetics of costume details in Chekhov’s short stories («The Princess», «Terror (My Friend’s story)», «Three Years», «My Life (The Story of a Provincial)»). The analysis of Chekhov’s prose highlites a number of functions played by characters’s costumes, for example: first, the costumes simulate the structure of the story, and second, they form in a story the implication by hidden motives. The author shows the polysemy, subtextuality of the costume in Chekhov’s prose.

HOW A YOUNG BUTTON-GIRL FOUND HERSELF IN A HANGMAN’S NOOSE (METAPHORISATION – REALIZATION OF A METAPHOR – METAMORPHOSES – REMAKING)

The article analyses Felix Krivin’s two-plot miniature „Gossip” from the point of view of semantic coherence between the assumed real plot and its fairy tale realization. The author shows what one should know and what language should be spoken so that both plots could be understood. This is the reason for comparing semiotics of different types of transformations: spell of a fairy tale, vegetative metamorphoses, remaking, remaking, reforging, remelting, modification (in gossip), metaphor realization, sense (symbolic) paradigmatics. The Supplement gives the examples of visualization of such paradigms on the basis of city sculptures (buttons, needle, sewing), botanical drawings, still lifes in painting and icons depicting Madonna and Child, Madonna Lactans, Nursing, Breastfeeding Madonna.

«THE RHYTHMIC MAGIC» OF A.S. PUSHKIN’S «BRONZE HORSEMAN» IN VYACH. IVANOV’S AND SYMBOLIST’S POETICS (FROM THE EIDOS SOUND – TO TEXTUALISM STRATEGY)

The article is devoted to the problem of reception of the semantic nature of sound symbols of A.S. Pushkin’s poem «Bronze Horseman». The authors’ strategies of a sound mythologization in theoretical and practical work of Vyach. Ivanov, Andrey Bely, V. Bryusov, A. Blok are considered. It is shown that the Russian poets-symbolists considered Pushkin’s poetry and the poem «Bronze Horseman» as an important source of a sound suggestive image which has the archaic nature and is connected with traditions of magic ritual poetry.

FAUST IN THE SECOND FIVE-YEAR PLAN ERA, OR CREATION MYTH

It is a matter of the fairy tale «It can’t be true», published in 1935 in the German language. The writer returned to the fairy tale three times. He might have made the translation himself. The German version of the work is a supplementary text to «The beginning of the novel “The Return of Doctor Faust”». It focuses on the real event – the construction of Dnieper Hydroelectric Station. Creating the fairy tale the writer appealed to the folk and literary tradition. The rhetorical-heroic pathos of the work, the fabulous and the incredible are connected with the reality. The character’s travelling is a logically completed story which consists of several phases of the spiritual searching. The fairy tale is characterized by the minimum of language means. It is formed on the principle of hiding a part of the theme, kept in the word «Faust». The similar play resembles the internal search for the word meaning, the transderivational search (through the derivative, to the language basis). The fairy tale becomes a part of the complex allegory of an esoteric type. Extensive symbolic material allows to build the finest ideological constructions. The characters’ names Ivan Kuzmich and Nikita Fedorovich can be connected with the «Feodor Kuzmich’s mystery» – the story of Alexander I transformation. Home is not only the «live», «organic» ancestors’ tradition, but also the dynastic, feudal conception. It is ruled by the indisputable power. The writer connects the fairy tale with the materials on the historical semantics of the word combination «historical optimism». It’s characterized by the declarative solidarity with Voltaire’s story «Candide, or Optimism». Candide sets out to find happiness. In spite of hardships and temptations he remains an optimist in the Leibnizian sense: «we must cultivate our garden». The Soviet literature could have taken Voltaire’s irony as referring to itself.

POETICS OF THE ESCHATOLOGICAL PLOT IN THE NOVELS BY G. GAZDANOV

The article is devoted to the analysis of G. Gazdanov’s eschatological poetics. The author’s dramatic emotional experience of the catastrophical essence of human history and being is based on the conviction that the history of the mankind started “on the day when Cain slew his brother”, i.e. at that very moment when a human being perceived “the appeal of murder” in his own nature. Meanwhile, Gazdanov ranks peculiarly in the historical and literary context of the young emigration. The author’s artistic strategy is marked by an optimistic stoicism uncharacteristic of the generation’s self-consciousness. His entire literary route represents the overcoming of tragic sensation of being.

FROM PAST INTO PRESENT: THE SPECIFICITY OF THE REVIVAL INTEREST TO THOMAS HOOD IN THE POSTSOVIET RUSSIA

The growth of interest to Thomas Hood’s art in the last decades has been caused by the change in the perception of his art. The translators are interested not in social but in humorous and lyrical poems. Except his few works the majority were first interpreted in these years in the Russian language. Widely used in the Internet Hood’s lyric poem «To a False Friend», interpreted totally fifteen times turned out to be in tune with the modern world perception, the development of individualistic attitudes accompanied by increased feeling of loneliness in the world, transience and fragility of feelings, insincerity as a characteristic of relations between beloved people.

ON DEATH AND PHILOSOPHY IN THE TRANSLATION OF T.S. ELIOT’S POEM “WHISPERS OF IMMORTALITY” INTO RUSSIAN

Translation of poetic texts is a significant issue in theoretical and applied translation sudies. And it did not spare the poetic heritage of Thomas Stearns Eliot. His complex, expressive language, rich and full of allusions, and undersurface meaning creates a lot of difficulties in translation. In this article, three translations of T.S. Eliot’s poem “Whispers of immortality” into Russian are observed, considering the conceptual plan of the original text and how it is retained in the translation. The authors analyze the expression of lexical semantic fields of death, philosophy, and passion in the English and Russian texts and come to the conclusion that the translation was influenced by the cultural background of the translators and their desire to connect the themes of immortality and physicality, so that the poem would look whole and produce a strong emotional effect. As a result, the reader may get a false impression that Eliot did not see philosophy as a path to immortality, but as a sensual passion for death – we strive to demolish this myth by our study.

E.A. BORATYNSKY’S POETICAL PHILOSOPHY: BORDERS OF THE BEING

The article investigates some mythopoetical motives forming “the uncommon expression of the face” of E.A. Boratynsky’s lyrics. The semantics of mythologemes “the first” and “the last” depicting universal principles of the Being in linking its “endings” and “beginnings” as well as mythological and literary archetypes of visual image of old age as E.A. Boratynsky’s dominant gerontological motive are analyzed. Mythopoetics of Number “two” (Boratynsky’s numerological code) is also shown in its modeling and space constructing functions and ambivalent semantics.

M.E. SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN AND ANTIQUE LITERATURE

M.E. Saltykov-Shchedrin’s making reference of antique authors in his prose has not yet attracted researchers’ attention. Meanwhile, he frequently mentions antique authors and cites their works in his prose. Antique literature happens to be a source of Saltykov’s poetics, which becomes obvious in the light of satire theory elaborated by M.M. Bakhtin in relation to the category of genre memory. In this perspective, the article views the novel “Modern Idill” (“Sovremennaya idilliya”), which generally agrees to Bakhtin’s commentary on Menippean satire.

SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN’S OPINION ON SLAVOPHILIA

The article discusses Saltykov’s relation to the Slavophilist trend in Russian philosophy, the writer’s dialogue with major figures of Slavophilia, with the Aksakovs family in particular. The article author’s special attention is paid to the difference in the novelist’s attitude to the early and late periods of Slavophilia.

FOLK SONG, I.V. PAVLOV AND SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN’S NOVEL “THE SUITOR”

The article deals with Saltykov-Shchedrin’s novel “The Suitor” whose text is saturated with folk songs. Their accurate identification shows that the writer selected the songs that had a certain reputation in literature. The cult of folk songs typical of 1850s had a special support among young Slavophiles, and even more so was it maintained by “young editors” in the “Moskvityanin” magazine. The novel’s dedication to I.V. Pavlov, the publisher of the “Moskovsky Vestnik” (Moscow Gazette), helps us to realize that Pavlov’s and Saltykov-Shchedrin’s ideological standing was the opposite of Slavophilia, which is reflected in the selection of songs.

“RIVER” IN THE STRUCTURE OF SALTYKOV-SHCHEDRIN’S “NEW LANGUAGE” OF LITERATURE

The «River» as the mythopoetic symbol and the element of the «new language of literature» appeared in Saltykov-Shchedrin’s «Provincial Essays» and in the later works of the Vyatka period, first – as a poetic image associated with the tradition of Gogol and later as an image reinterpreted, transformed according to Saltykov’s worldview. This poetic image developed during the 1860s and then was transformed into a universal eschatological character in «The History of a Town».

THE TOWN OF GLUPOV’S THURST FOR POWER AND LOVE OF AUTHORITY IN BIBLICAL CONTEXT

The article shows that the problem of power and people in “The History of a Town” is revealed with a focus on the Bible in its interpretation of the Old Believers. The characters of mayors of the town of Glupov encroaching on the prerogatives of the divine, and the characters of their subjects storing their “stubborn love for authority”, correspond to the Old Believers’ views on the false gods (idols) and idolaters. The punishment for apostasy is “the kingdom of those abandoned by God” (N.A. Berdyaev), the tragic awareness of this permeating the works of Old Believers and “The History of a Town”.

AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL MOTIVES IN ZBIGNIEW HERBERT’S WORKS (introductory remarks)

The article poses a theoretical problem of the autobiographic in lyric poetry. The way the poems by a Polish poet Z. Herbert are discussed in the article demonstrates that the biographical key in the studies of Herbert’s works will never result in an accurate reading of his texts. The article writer touches upon some disputable points in the interpretation of his lyric poems and traces the mechanics of substituting the ‘fictitious’ or ‘poetic’ by the ‘autobiographic’.

RUSSIAN SYMBOLISM AND TRADITIONS OF ENGLISH PRE-RAPHAELITES: ISSUES OF INTERMEDIALISM

The article writer examines the strategies of intermedialism in Russian symbolist poetry, which were incited by the English Pre-Raphaelite painters. The aim of the article is to show that ecphrasis as an image in a real poem becomes the core element in the symbolic language capable of determining the visuality of an artistic image. In the article, the writer defines the leading symbols of Pre-Raphaelites, who had a great influence on Russian symbolists creating their transintermedial imagery. The writer touches upon the transformation of artistic images belonging to D.G. Rossetti in the works of Alexander Blok and Viacheslav Ivanov.

ON TWO EPISODES IN THE HISTORY OF RUSSIAN LITERARY ANIMALISM

The article deals with the functions of animalistic imagery in literature. The object of study is two literary texts – a short story by F. M. Dostoyevsky “The Crocodile. An Extraordinary Incident” and a short story “Crocodile” by a twentieth century writer M. Kozyrev. Zoonyms have quite a number of expressive functions. In the analyzed stories, the images become animalistic versions of anecdotal circumstances.

SEMPERVERO, BORN CHETVERIKOV: LITANY TO THE POET’S NAME

The article discusses the work by Sempervero, an unknown writer and translator of the 19th century. Chetverikov by his birth, he uses the Latin-Italian form of an assumed name with some musical etymology. For him, “entire Italy” was imprinted in the phrase sempre vero, ‘always true’ in Italian. The idea of a creative mission associated itself with the enactment of the measure of truth as a test. He was one of those who laid the foundations of criticism and didactics of translation. His translation skills are tagged with features of an independent research area. They exists in the form of practicing interpreter’s reflection, the one’s who is trying to understand his work. The poet expressed the Cartesian principle of the universality of thought, which can be adequately expressed by means of any language. Translating the tragedy of Goethe, Sempervero worked not purely with the German original, but with a “macro text”. Such “polygenesis” resulted in a stylistically heterogeneous text. Along with his translation of “Faustus” Sempervero offers samples of other translations: Russian, French, and English. The fundamental feature of that publication was the use of body of texts, not just one “canonical” text. The poet was aware that there cannot be real full-scale art without an honest professional response to it. Each entry resembles a text variant. These variants are quite different from, for example, editions of the literary texts created by the same person. Like folklore, a text lives in constant motion, and change. It cannot be understood and studied, if recorded only once. So, some literary fabric is made as an integral process, as a sprawl of initial structure, that is clothed in new translations.

ALCHEMY AS A BOOK OF MIRRORS

The article analyzes the relationship between the alchemical discourse and mirror phenomenology. The deep core idea of alchemy and mirrors is the desire to master unlimited resources – the breakthrough from discretely deterministic world into the space of unlimited scope. The article deals with basic alchemical approach to the mirror phenomenon. Mirror alchemy creates multiple ways to go beyond oneself. At this point, the alchemical transfiguration could be realized.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (Once again on Pushkin’s poem “LAND AND SEA”)

The article dwells upon the poem «Land and Sea» (1821) by Alexander Pushkin in terms of its literary sources. Challenging the position on this issue that was expressed in Alexander Dolinin’s article accepted by “Pushkin’s Encyclopedia” the author points out that this new position is not based on the detailed comparative analysis of all texts. The dominant part of Moutonnet de Clairfons’s translation as a source of Pushkin’s poem remains only declared but is not proved.

«A HUNTING ACCIDENT»: THE MULTIDIMENSIONALITY OF THE COLOR SPECTRUM

The article is devoted to the semiotics of the costume in early Chekhov’s story «A Hunting Accident». The analysis of the costume’s senses allows to select a few functions of the costume’s color: the color marks the hypostasis of the characters, forms the subtextuality and the intertextual links.
